Virgin Mobile US deploys Starent Networks
with NetSpira ECS
1 November 2004 - Tewksbury, MA
Starent Networks Corporation today announced
that Virgin Mobile USA, one of the fastest
growing wireless service providers in
the U.S., has chosen Starent to provide
a next generation data access infrastructure.
Virgin Mobile is leveraging the Starent
Networks ST16 Intelligent Mobile Gateway
for enhanced data and content-based billing
capabilities.
The deployment of the Starent ST16 as
a CDMA2000 1X Home Agent enables Virgin
Mobile to expand on its wide range of
voice, data and multimedia solutions.
These include features like the newly-debuted
VirginXL suite of content, which takes
advantage of bigger bandwidth and faster
data speeds to serve up an array of downloadable,
full-color games, wallpapers, screensavers
and more. Additionally, with its deep
packet inspection capabilities, the ST16
allows Virgin Mobile to customize their
billing options based on application,
content type, content provider, quality
of service, and many other criteria
all conducted within the Virgin Mobile
Pay As You Go environment.
Virgin Mobile is committed to achieving
the highest possible levels of customer
service, as exemplified by the 95 percent
satisfaction rate* among our subscribers,
said Mike Parks, chief information officer
of Virgin Mobile USA. We selected
Starent Networks based on our confidence
that both its technology and its team will
help ensure that we meet this objective
as we expand our network capabilities.
The Starent ST16 is an excellent
fit for Virgin Mobiles network which
has high data usage, requires multiple
billing capabilities and needs to scale
rapidly, said Ashraf Dahod, president
and CEO of Starent Networks Corporation.
We are excited to work together
with Virgin Mobile to create and grow
a unique service offering with a variety
of communications and information options
for their subscribers.
In addition to the next generation data
services, the solution provides enhanced
charging capabilities for Virgin Mobile.
The Starent ST16 has exceptional performance
capabilities offering more flexibility
in how services are tracked and billed.
NetSpira Networks is working with
Starent Networks on the advanced billing
solution.
Starent gives Virgin Mobile greater
control over the data services consumed
by the carriers customers,
said Ken Rehbehn, director of Wireless
Research for Current Analysis. With
its powerful brand in the youth segment
of the market, Virgin is positioned to
lead in the delivery of video clips, games
and mobile music and deploying
its own Starent data gateways is an important
element in executing its plan.
